This comes after lawmakers returned to Tallahassee for a special session to consider redrawing the state’s U.S. House district lines. Gov. Ron DeSantis issued the proclamation calling the special session earlier in the year, and offered a proposed map last week, just one day before the session was set to begin.State lawmakers last redrew district lines in 2022, following the 2020 Census. Reapportionment, the process of redistributing seats in the U.S. House based on population, resulted in Florida’s U.S. House delegation increasing to 28 seats that year. Currently, 20 seats are held by Republicans, with eight held by Democrats. The new map is expected to give Republicans a greater advantage, widening the margin to 24 to four. The new map leaves North Florida’s districts untouched, but makes changes in Central and South Florida, with Democrats potentially losing one seat in the Orlando area, one in the Tampa area, and two in the Miami-Ft. Lauderdale-West Palm Beach area.Note: If the map doesn’t appear to be working correctly, refresh your browser window.Copyright 2026 by WJXT News4JAX - All rights reserved.

Credit: Governor Ron DeSantis FLORIDA, USA — Florida Gov. Ron DeSantis has signed a newly redrawn congressional map into law, finalizing changes to the state’s district boundaries that are expected to have significant political implications ahead of upcoming elections. DeSantis announced the signing in a social media post saying, "Signed, Sealed, and Delivered." The map was first shared with Fox News prior to the special session. Florida State Senator Carlos Guillermo Smith wrote on X, "The fact that the Governor shared his illegally-rigged Congressional map with {Fox News} before sharing it with state senators voting on them TOMORROW shows how partisan and illegitimate this process is." Florida lawmakers met in a special session last week to discuss the new map. Florida's state House approved the bill 83-28 on April 29. As the bill was approved, state Rep. Angie Nixon could be seen and heard taking to the aisles of the chambers with a megaphone protesting the bill.  The Florida Senate voted 21-17 to approve the bill and sent it to the governor's desk.  The new map is expected to flip a handful of districts from Democrat to Republican helping the GOP retain control of the U.S. House ahead of the midterm elections in November.
